Enhanced Mosquito
Abatement Program

Summer is here and with it comes the problem of the mosquito. Elmwood Park is served by the joint Leyden Township Enhanced Mosquito Abatement Program. Leyden Township takes an aggressive approach in reducing the amount of mosquito's in the area, including frequent spraying during the season, as well as catch basin treatments and fogging treatments. The Township utilizes Clarke Environmental Mosquito Management, Inc. for services. Clarke incorporates the elements vital to successful mosquito control programs as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and all products used in the treatments are applied in compliance with the State and Federal EPA regulations. The cost to communities participating in Leyden’s Program is based on a per capita basis rather than an acreage basis; Elmwood Park’s cost for Summer 2004 services is $16.071.76. For questions about the mosquito program, including about the threats posed by mosquitoes and prevention techniques, residents can contact Clarke Mosquito Control at The Mosquito Hotline at 800.942.2555, or visit Leyden Township’s website at http://www.leydentownship.com/serv/mos.htm. For the latest information on West Nile Virus, consult the Center for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov. Parents who are concerned about using DEET or other products on children may wish to consult their health care provider for advice. The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) can also provide information through a toll-free number, 1-800-858-7378 or http://npic.orst.edu.
